The Brief
I was approached to create an illustration and design a logo for a global community tech event taking place in Utrecht. This event spans the globe, featuring localized 3D illustrations showcasing the respective cities it visits. My task was to develop the illustration and devise a concept for the logo.
The Solution:
While Utrecht boasts its beauty, it posed a challenge as the city's recognisable elements, such as the famous Dom Toren (church tower) and the lowered canals, resemble those of other Dutch cities. This similarity had the potential to be somewhat uninspiring. While studying photos of the Dom Toren, I noticed a resemblance to old sci-fi movies featuring church towers with flying saucers around them. I decided to embrace this theme, creating saucers using the Kubernetes logo (a popular open-source cloud orchestrator) and depicting them invading the city. The concept aimed to convey the idea that the Kubernetes community was gathering or landing in Utrecht. This concept served as the foundation for the logo and promotional assets, including posters and t-shirts.
